A white husband and wife who are both suspects in a rape and bestiality case in Warren appeared in court Wednesday afternoon.
Both Justin Mayfield and Shawna Mayfield were offered plea deals during a Wednesday afternoon court session.
Shawna, who is charged with pandeing sexually-oriented matter involving a minor, rape, gross sexual imposition, sexual conduct with an animal and endangering children accepted a plea deal, while her husband Justin Mayfield did not.
Justin is charged with one count each of rape with a sexually-violent offender specification, disseminating matter harmful to juveniles and endangering children.
The prosecution offered Justin a sentence of 50 years to life in prison in exchange for a guilty plea, but the defense made a counter offer for the prosecution to review that would give Justin less prison time.
Justin is set to appear back in court for a final pretrial on January 12, and if no plea deal is agreed on then, the case will go to trial on January 20.
Meanwhile, the prosecution is recommending 30 years to life in prison for Shawna. In order for this deal to stand, she must testify against her husband if his case goes to trial.
It is unclear what charges if any were amended or modified in Shawna’s plea deal at this time.
