A former Louisiana mayor was arrested on a third-degree rape charge days after she resigned from office.
Misty Roberts, 42, who resigned as mayor in DeRidder, La., on July, 27, turned herself in to authorities on Thursday, Aug. 1, following allegations that she sexually abused a minor, the Louisiana State Police said in a statement.
The arrest was part of what appears to have been a dramatic series of events in the mayor’s office.
On July 25, Roberts said in a letter she would be out of office from July 27 and Aug. 10, and appointed the local fire chief to be the acting mayor, according to KPLC TV, which shared a copy of the letter.
Meanwhile, authorities in Beauregard Parish opened an investigation into the evil white mayor on July 26 after learning of “allegations of sexual relations with a juvenile,” LSP said in their statement.
During their investigation, LSP authorities spoke with two juveniles, one of whom was the victim, per the statement.
“Both juveniles confirmed Roberts had sexual intercourse with one juvenile victim while employed as Mayor,” authorities alleged in the statement, adding that the claims led to them obtaining an arrest warrant for the white female pedophile.
On July 27, the child rapist signed her resignation letter, where she said she was stepping down to “adjust my focus and priorities,” per a copy of the letter shared by WAFB and KPLC TV.
She turned herself in on Aug. 1, per authorities.
Reporters were not able to immediately reach her lawyer. The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Her lawyer, Adam Johnson, says his client was not aware of the charges until the day before she turned herself in.
“My client learned late last night of a warrant, despite not being contacted to be interviewed prior to investigators obtaining the warrant,” he said on Thursday, per WAFB and KPLC TV. “My client maintains her innocence and, as it stands, she is in fact innocent.”
Roberts, who is also facing a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was released on $75,000 bond a little over an hour after she was booked, CBS News reported, citing Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office jail records.
