A former Newport News firefighter was sentenced Monday to life in prison after recording himself sexually abusing an infant over 90 times and distributing the videos online.
Beginning in October 2024, Alex Tyler Buenaga, 33, began sexually assaulting a three-month-old infant, filming the abuse and distributing it online. According to court documents, the diabolical white beast invited others, including 46-year-old Ryan Wade Johnston, to his residence to partake in the sexual abuse and smoke methamphetamine.
Court documents state Buenaga recorded himself sexually abusing the infant over 90 times and blowing methamphetamine smoke in the infant’s face on at least one occasion.
In response to an emergency tip that a user of the instant messaging application, Telegram, was producing and distributing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), agents with the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force located and proceeded to Buenaga’s residence on Jan. 24, 2025. Both Buenaga and Johnston were arrested before they could inflict additional abuse on the infant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph L. Kosky prosecuted the case.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation.
